BSD : Opinions : Beyond Windows and Linux: Discovering the BSDs
Posted: ( Wed 22nd Nov 2000 06:24:43[PM] UTC )
The BSDs have been around for a long time - longer than Linux. But they have received much less attention than Linux in the press because they have fewer noisy supporters. Nevertheless, they continue to thrive, because of their similarities to, and differences from, Linux.

BSD : Howtos : Linux compatibility, the hard way
Posted: ( Sat 18th Nov 2000 05:50:30[PM] UTC )
It's always irritated me to have two Linux installs on my system, however: one under /linux, and one under /usr/compat/linux. It seems it would be possible to run programs in Linux mode using the existing Linux partition, rather than installing linux_base.

FreeBSD : Reviews : Open-sourcing the Apple
Posted: ( Fri 17th Nov 2000 07:08:39[PM] UTC )
Is OS X just another fancy GUI-based operating desktop system like Windows or is it a more industrially useful server-centric operating system like FreeBSD or Linux-based OS's?

NetBSD : Articles : BSD on Virtual PC
Posted: ( Wed 8th Nov 2000 04:35:00[PM] UTC )
Virtual PC is a PC emulator. It emulates the behavior of a fairly standard PC, including text mode video, graphics, and sound. It's totally software based, but it acts like a computer similar to a PC. This article's author shares his experiences with using the Virtual PC to run NetBSD.

BSD : Articles : Esoteric commands (part two)
Posted: ( Fri 3rd Nov 2000 06:22:34[PM] UTC )
This article continues with more explanations of some esoteric commands that are often installed by default (in the base install) by different BSD flavours.

Posted: ( Fri 3rd Nov 2000 05:55:57[PM] UTC )
The miscellaneous utilities on BSD-type machines range from "[" (yes that's a command) and ac to znew and zzz with strange names such as zic, atactl, vgrind, chrtbl, usbhidctl, lookbib, crunchide, hpftodit and fsirand. This article briefly explores a few uncommonly-used commands.

BSD : News : BSDi receives $5 Million investment
Posted: ( Tue 31st Oct 2000 11:47:44[PM] UTC )
BSDi will use the proceeds from the investment to continue to develop and market advanced BSD operating systems and its iXtreme Series line of Internet servers computing systems and to provide ongoing backing for the FreeBSD Project, the developers of the FreeBSD open source operating system.

FreeBSD : Articles : An introduction to Webmin
Posted: ( Sun 29th Oct 2000 05:03:24[PM] UTC )
When you think of using pretty GUI administrative utilities, Unix is usually not the first operating system that springs to mind. However, the operating systems that do provide nice-looking utilities usually don't let you configure the system any deeper than the vendor wants you to. Fortunately, with FreeBSD and the ports collection, you can have the best of both worlds.

OpenBSD : Articles : OpenBSD as a database server
Posted: ( Sun 22nd Oct 2000 06:44:51[AM] UTC )
Support for OpenBSD (within PHP in particular) has in the past been sketchy, but things appear to be improving now. PHP3 and MySQL are both in the ports tree distributed with OpenBSD 2.7, making installation and configuration a relatively simple process.

FreeBSD : News : New FreeBSD core team elected
Posted: ( Fri 13th Oct 2000 03:04:56[AM] UTC )
FreeBSD has a new core team which was elected by active FreeBSD committers. According to the FreeBSD Handbook, the core team "constitutes the project's 'Board of Directors', responsible for deciding the project's overall goals and direction as well as managing specific areas of the FreeBSD project landscape."

FreeBSD : Articles : Dancing with the devil: FreeBSD 4.1
Posted: ( Tue 10th Oct 2000 07:55:29[PM] UTC )
I've loved FreeBSD since the first moment I saw that devilish logo. The OS has always impressed me with its stunning performance and infallible stability. Of course, times change and for numerous reasons I've been running Windows 2000 lately. The other day I noticed that FreeBSD 4.1 had been released, so I thought I would give it a whirl on my spare hard drive.

OpenBSD : News : Sniping at OpenBSD
Posted: ( Mon 9th Oct 2000 07:49:46[PM] UTC )
There was a reaction to the announcements by the OpenBSD developer team about the exploits that surprised me. The reaction was to imply that the developers had been hiding the truth about the exploits so as to not tarnish the reputation of OpenBSD.

OpenBSD : News : OpenBSD plugs a rare security leak
Posted: ( Fri 6th Oct 2000 12:44:45[AM] UTC )
For most open source projects, news of an overlooked security hole is simply part of the debugging process. But for the developers of OpenBSD, an operating system whose design motto is "secure by default," it's nothing short of an affront.
