Linux : Reviews : Red Hat Linux 7.0
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 07:10:01[PM] UTC )
"Red Hat 7.0 is more polished overall than 6.2 and is very competent on the surface. The GCC issue, however, is serious enough for me to question whether the distribution could be deployed in a live environment. On the whole, this is a shame as it's a nice package. If anything, it's better suited to the desktop than the server."

Linux : Reviews : BestLinux 2000 R3
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 06:57:18[PM] UTC )
"Does BestLinux live up to its name? I personally don’t think so. I think it misses that mark by a fair margin. Its lack of hardware/software configuration tools, originality, and general configuration mishaps are seriously holding it back. This may change in the next version, and I really hope it does."

Linux : Reviews : Mandrake Linux 7.2
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 06:54:43[PM] UTC )
"If you want a desktop linux, this is it. This is by far the easiest to use operating system I've seen in a long while. That includes MacOS and Windows. It's unfortunate that it will take a few days of configuring to be as fast and as convenient as my previous install."

Linux : Reviews : Helix GNOME
Posted: ( Thu 21st Dec 2000 10:36:27[PM] UTC )
"I really like the amount of polish that has gone into Helix GNOME. While it has a few stability and usability issues, this preview release doesn't have anything major enough to keep someone from using it as their main desktop now. And the eye candy is great."

Linux : Reviews : 3Com Office Connect Internet Server
Posted: ( Tue 19th Dec 2000 11:47:15[PM] UTC )
3Com's Internet Server integrates a firewall, email, a web server, file and print sharing, and naming services in one device. Inside the box sits an Intel processor running Linux. Storage for the device is provided by a 10Gb hard disk, making it big enough for most email web server needs.

Linux : Reviews : A sneak preview of Emacs 21.0
Posted: ( Mon 18th Dec 2000 09:41:46[PM] UTC )
Emacs has moved from a program that integrated into X only uneasily into one that provides some added functionality and features to make it a more comfortable fit. It's clear that even with the small survey offered here, Emacs has evolved dramatically this time around.

Linux : Reviews : Using Kondara MNU/Linux Server 2000
Posted: ( Sun 17th Dec 2000 12:44:34[AM] UTC )
Kondara MNU/Linux seems to be geared toward the server market. I think this is excellent, but I think they approach it backward. The server setting installs the servers but does not install the configuration tools or X11 (which would be required for those tools). The Workstation setting installs X11 and the configuration tools, but not the servers on which the tools work!

Linux : Reviews : Is GNOME ready for the corporate desktop?
Posted: ( Sun 17th Dec 2000 12:34:58[AM] UTC )
The answer is no—at least, not right away. As even GNOME's most ardent supporters will readily concede, GNOME 1.2 isn't going to lure many corporate Windows and Office users away from the Redmondian fold. The deeper question is whether GNOME's development trajectory will eventually create a competitive product.

Linux : Reviews : TuxTops Obsidian N30W
Posted: ( Sun 17th Dec 2000 12:23:57[AM] UTC )
The TuxTops Obsidian is as close to a no-compromise laptop as you can buy, it combines battery life, performance, display and video capabilities and even ergonomics in a package that will make most people happy. Most importantly, every TuxTops laptop comes with Linux pre-installed.

Linux : Reviews : StarOffice is a stellar suite
Posted: ( Sun 17th Dec 2000 12:20:14[AM] UTC )
StarOffice does not have all the features of Office, but this is as much a blessing as it is a curse. While there are some features that MS Office users may miss, StarOffice is a lot less of a behemoth than Microsoft Office and is not quite as intimidating to new users.

Linux : Reviews : Cd player reviews
Posted: ( Mon 11th Dec 2000 12:42:27[AM] UTC )
There are a lot of CD players available. Which are good and have the features you need? RawMeat has reviewed and rated 34 Linux cd players.

Linux : Reviews : EPIwm and FVWM95
Posted: ( Tue 28th Nov 2000 05:53:39[PM] UTC )
The differences between FVWM95 and EPIwm are nothing short of dizzying, from their initial design to their final appearance and workflow. When looking at them together, it should make X users appreciate the incredible diversity available for their choice of GUI.

Linux : Reviews : Mandrake 7.2
Posted: ( Mon 27th Nov 2000 05:07:56[PM] UTC )
MandrakeSoft prides themselves in having an easy-to-use distribution, good for newbies and vets alike. And unto that goal they have succeeded, for the most part. Mandrake has many automated tools for hardware configuration, network setup, and much more.

Linux : Reviews : Redhat column part 2: Update
Posted: ( Sun 26th Nov 2000 09:49:29[PM] UTC )
So, the install was easy, but that's all for naught if the distribution is garbage. Unless you've been hiding under a rock or don't read sites like Slashdot, the press, in my opinion, has been less than stellar and even wildly inaccurate about Redhat 7.

Linux : Reviews : SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional
Posted: ( Sun 26th Nov 2000 09:47:02[PM] UTC )
While new Linux users may find SuSE's offerings somewhat daunting, the distribution's broad selection of tools and enterprise-level networking options makes SuSE 7.0 Professional a dream come true for Linux developers and IT professionals.
