Linux : Articles : Linux vs. Windows TCO: Complex issues, no easy answers
Posted: ( Tue 15th Apr 2003 09:58:03[AM] UTC )
In this article, industry experts comment on a recent IDC white paper which stated that the five-year total cost of ownership of Linux was higher than that of Windows 2000. According to some, the TCO issue is less important to most enterprises than the issue of return on investment -- and Linux versus Unix may be a more compelling contest than Linux versus Windows.

Posted: ( Tue 4th Mar 2003 12:33:18[PM] UTC )
Sure there are cost and maintenance savings in opting for Linux on the desktop over Windows, but administrators still have to contend with some setbacks. Application availability, or compatibility, is an issue as is training and potential downtime that accompanies a migration.

Linux : Articles : Linux in the Enterprise Closer Than You Think
Posted: ( Tue 31st Dec 2002 09:41:58[AM] UTC )
I have watched with some bemusement the overall trend of the articles that are coming out on Linux in the enterprise, and not just the ones from ELF. What Linux needs, these articles intone, is more applications to be successful. If only there were more applications for Linux, pundits and corporate IT people have said, then it could not help but be more successful.

Posted: ( Mon 5th Aug 2002 09:13:33[AM] UTC )
In this technical article, Matchbox project leader Matthew Allum introduces his creation: a small footprint window manager for PDAs and other resource- constrained embedded devices. Allum recalls why he decided to embark on the project, outlines its key objectives, describes its architecture and unique characteristics, and ponders its future.

Linux : Articles : The future belongs to GNOME; inertia, to KDE
Posted: ( Thu 27th Jun 2002 11:19:06[AM] UTC )
Once things are done a certain way, headed in a certain direction, it\'s really tough to alter them. That\'s what keeps Windows on millions of machines whose owners hate that operating system. And it\'s what keeps KDE on my desktop, at least for the moment.

Linux : Articles : The UnitedLinux Dark Horse: Conectiva
Posted: ( Thu 27th Jun 2002 11:19:06[AM] UTC )
If you watch Linux-related news, then for the last few weeks it\'s been hard to do anything without running into pronouncements about UnitedLinux. UnitedLinux is certainly a curious beast, a kind of Tuxed-out Cerberus with four heads, where more might sprout out at any moment. Let\'s move through some of the hype and guesswork and take a look at one of the lesser-known heads--at least, lesser-known in English-speaking Linux markets.

Posted: ( Thu 13th Jun 2002 01:19:53[PM] UTC )
StarOffice is a complete package. It\'s no longer free as in beer, but it\'s a good buy, especially if you get it as part of a bundle such as a Linux distribution or Ximian\'s Red Carpet Express.

Especially if you\'re just starting out in embedded development, the wealth of available bootloaders, scaled-down distributions, filesystems, and GUIs can seem overwhelming. But this wealth of options is actually a boon, allowing you to tailor your development or user environment exactly to your needs. This overview of embedded development on Linux will help you make sense of it all.
