With more than 5000 Linux servers connecting hotel front desk workstations to a centralized reservation system, it is the largest Linux deployment currently in place -- and with 500-1000 servers being added each year, is likely to remain the largest for several years to come.

Linux : Interviews : Dan York - President of the LPI
Posted: ( Fri 19th Jan 2001 07:04:26[PM] UTC )
"The challenge is that as companies continue to embrace Linux as a solution, they need people who can understand and implement Linux-based solutions. Training is a key to that. Businesses need to help their staff become more familiar with Linux and be able to implement those solutions. It's critical!"

Linux : Interviews : Tiny computer runs on Linux
Posted: ( Wed 17th Jan 2001 05:12:16[AM] UTC )
Imagine stumbling into the laundry mat with a load of clothes and only having to swipe a card to use the washer. Then you walk over to the soda machine and buy a drink with another swipe of a card. All the while, several cigarette pack-sized digital cameras are keeping track of what you are doing. This scene is not science fiction but potentially very real thanks to a new personal computer-on-a-chip made by ZF Linux Devices of Palo Alto, Calif. David Feldman, ZF Linux’s founder and CEO talks about the new MachZ chip.

Posted: ( Tue 16th Jan 2001 07:26:23[AM] UTC )
"Our workstations are running Linux Mandrake 7.2 with either WordPerfect Office or Star Office. Approximately 95 percent of the employees use Star Office. All of our developers use Linux based tools such as Java, Apache, PHP, emacs, Python, and PERL to develop our travel industry applications. They all run on standard equipment that was not nearly top-of-the-line."

Linux : Interviews : Daniel Frye, Director of IBM Linux Technology Center
Posted: ( Mon 15th Jan 2001 08:52:02[AM] UTC )
"We are working closely with the GNOME-print project to integrate our recently open source OMNI print architecture into GNOME as the standard printing architecture. This will bring hundreds of print devices to Linux and GNOME as well as photo quality printing. We are also at this point in time in talks with the GNOME people to integrate our speech recognition software with gtk and GNOME."

Linux : Interviews : Red Hat CTO looks to make running Linux less of a chore
Posted: ( Thu 11th Jan 2001 06:26:22[PM] UTC )
"Tux is a Web server that we built. It's actually integrated with the 2.4 kernel, and it delivers world record SpecWeb (testing standard) performance. We set four records: single, dual, quad and eight-CPU records. One of the things that we see is being able to use Tux as an Apache (Web server software) accelerator."

Linux : Interviews : Mandrakesoft CEO defends Linux
Posted: ( Wed 10th Jan 2001 06:35:25[AM] UTC )
Does Linux need to be slimmed down? Poole, the co-founder and former chairman of Internet services firm Vivid Studios prior to his work with Mandrakesoft, doesn't think so. "People said the same thing about the Internet in the early days," he says. "They said the Internet should be streamlined, that it was too much. Obviously, things need to be simple for users, but I don't think restricting choice is really the answer."

Linux : Interviews : Sun sees big future for NFS v.4 in Linux
Posted: ( Wed 10th Jan 2001 02:10:04[AM] UTC )
"I think there’s a fear of Sun "strong-arming" the development process. Because of that, we’ve deliberately been hands-off. For example, rather than doing all the development in house we’ve funded the University of Michigan Center for Information Technology Integration's work on NFS version 4. Their work was not controlled by Sun."

Linux : Interviews : Linus: Partying hard over Linux 2.4
Posted: ( Sat 6th Jan 2001 12:58:23[AM] UTC )
"With questions like that, how are you ever going to write an interesting article? 'Is Linux an even more viable contender ... ?' What do you expect me to say? Give you the standard boring press-release about how we're changing the world, how we've innovated more things than those ancient Chinese dynasties with their gunpowder thing, and how everybody and their pets are going to live happily ever after thanks to the new release?"

Linux : Interviews : Jason Haas on LinuxPPC -- and Drunk Drivers
Posted: ( Fri 5th Jan 2001 09:30:21[PM] UTC )
"Franz Sirl, a Linux/PowerPC developer, has done a lot of work on optimizing GCC for PPC. Look at PPC vs. x86 benchmarks. Theoretically, PowerPC kicks x86's butt, but if things aren't optimized for it (as often happens in this x86 world), it may not seem like such a hot processor."
