Linux was the fastest growing operating system in the point-of-sale (POS) terminal market in 2003, according to a study by IHL Consulting Group. However, Linux's market share is still quite small, and adoption has slowed since Microsoft released Windows XP Embedded (XPe) IHL says.

To the outsider, and even to me for some time, the various lawsuits involving the SCO Group follow a relatively simple story line. I'm not a lawyer, but after many interviews with the involved parties and lawyers, the case boils down to divergent interpretations of the subject matter.

If we were to re-write Linux, taking clues from various operating systems, what would we make sure it did? Our next-generation operating system (NGOS) would be completely modular in design, aimed at 64-bit hardware, and with an interface that would change the way people compute. It would support a large number of applications and hardware devices, accepting device drivers written for other operating system, and run applications written for other operating system under an emulation mode.
