In his recent column Jack MacCrisken criticized open source advocates for treating the merits of open source versus proprietary software development as a simplistic battle between the forces of Good and Evil. Let's be clear. It's Microsoft that diagnosed Linux as a supposed "cancer" and polarized the debate to begin with. So I'm here to offer a second opinion: Contrary to Dr. Ballmer's misinformed prognosis, the weight of evidence shows that Linux, and open source software in general, can in fact co-exist with proprietary software.

The existence different distributions of Linux have always given rise of conflicting views. Some feel that this leads to fragmentation and is therefore bad. Whereas there are others who feel that these actually enhance the product and help to customize it.So they are good for Linux's growth Evan Leibovitch, in defense of Linux and its various distros, likens it to a pizza. An interesting thought.

System administrators worldwide recently reported signs that another self-spreading program, or worm, had started to infect Linux systems. The worm's existence has given rise to two schools of thought. One, which feels that the worm will help in securing the system while the other is of the opinion that a worm is a worm after all and has to be eradicated. In this article we bring you the arguments put forth by the `cool about Cheese' school.

A new poll came up on my friend's site. Question - What's your software philosophy? My answer - Open Source. Response - disbelief. My friend could not believe that I would pick this option over GPL. As it turns out, if you answer GPL you get a big bear hug and the whole community rises to greet you. Any other answer gets you strange looks and requires an explanation. Here is my explanation.

This article examines the functioning of the GPL from the viewpoint of Capitalism, It does so with reference to the writings of one of the most hardline capitalists of all-Ayn Rand. And finally it concludes that the GPL operates along purely capitalist principles, and that the real enemies of Capitalism are those who seek to outlaw the GPL.

Like most other Open Source geeks, I would love calling myself a Linux evangelist. And this for two simple reasons--I love traveling and second and more important, I love talking about how Open Source has revolutionized Information Technology. The Open Source model of software development has churned out some truly remarkable pieces of software and is a fantastic example of global co-operation. The goal of the Open Source movement is to eventually replace the monopoly over thought and software imposed by companies like Microsoft and create a new order where freedom and flexibility is available to everyone. What is it about, how does it work and more importantly what can it do for you?
