"A typical review of StarOffice begins when the reviewer bemoans the time it takes to load the program, progresses to his or her dissatisfaction with the integrated desktop, and pretty well goes downhill from there. You'll not hear any of that from me. Even with the above well-known faults I found Star Office for Linux to be, well, not bad."

"I tried w3m out myself on a Linux box, and was interested to see how it laid out complicated pages. Most pages I visited seemed similar enough in layout to the graphic versions for me to follow what was going on. Navigation is handled with the keyboard only, and full instructions are found in w3m's manual or in the runtime help screen you can get by pressing H."

For folks who are interested in running a full Linux distro right from a FAT partition DragonLinux may be the way to go. Based on Slackware 7.1, DragonLinux V2r1 accomplishes its tasks with minimal fuss and a humorous installation guide. All without the use of UMSDOS.

SuSE's Linux 7.0 for PowerPC offers ease of installation, support for IBM and other systems, and just might make waiting for Mac OS X unnecessary.

SCWM is not a window manager that deserves to be banished to obscurity in the X community. Rather, it deserves a very close look by those users who really want to learn how graphical interfaces are put together and who want absolute precision in how they want their windows to appear.

"SuSE 7.0 is a big step in the right direction for SuSE. The GUI installer and configuration tools are vastly improved and very usable. The incredible amount of documentation included (both print and online) far outstrips anything included with any other distribution. The hardware support is also unparalleled."

If you're a Linux administrator and you're still using telnet for authentication, your network could be in danger. Secure Shell is a protocol for secure terminal sessions over the Internet. This means you can control who gets into your servers with strong cryptography, keep passphrases from being transmitted in the clear over the Internet, and strongly encrypt as well as compress terminal sesions as they happen.

In "AntiTrust," the new movie pitting a bunch of good-looking Open Source coders against a big, bad software company, the message is well-intentioned if a bit heavy-handed, but the plot requires you to suspend disbelief at several turns.

"WinLinux 2000 is a good package, but not really a Linux distribution for a real Linux user or one who expects to be. However, Windows users who would like to do some messing around on Linux and not a ton of heavy work will appreciate how easy WinLinux 2000 is to install and work with."
