Linux : Reviews : SuSE 7.1 - A first look
Posted: ( Tue 27th Feb 2001 06:04:37[PM] UTC )
"What's new besides KDE 2.0.1 and the 2.4 kernel? Quite a lot. XFree 4.02 can be used, as well as XFree 3.3.6, installable kernels are either 2.2.18 or 2.4. YAST2 can use GNU parted to shrink existing Windows partitions during the installation setup, everything is glibc 2.2.0 based, Netscape 6 is included, CUPS can be used for printing."

Linux : Reviews : Links provides multicolumn text browsing
Posted: ( Mon 26th Feb 2001 06:46:49[PM] UTC )
Unlike Lynx, Links provides quite a few extras with its display--the most noticeable being the multicolumn screen. Besides tabular support, frames are supported in versions 0.90 and beyond. Color support is also included.

Linux : Reviews : NetMAX FireWall worth the fickle installation
Posted: ( Fri 23rd Feb 2001 04:49:38[AM] UTC )
"NetMAX FireWall from Cybernet Systems is a smooth-running, easily configurable firewall, if you can get past its annoying setup and installation."

Linux : Reviews : Instant Messaging on GNU/Linux Part 3: Yahoo! and MSN
Posted: ( Fri 23rd Feb 2001 04:46:32[AM] UTC )
"First, we'll take a look at the Yahoo! client for Windows and see how its open source counterparts measure up. We'll look at the official Linux client for Yahoo! as well as a few open source clients. Next, we'll take a look at MSN and see what is available in the open source world for MSN-only clients."

Linux : Reviews : Win4Lin Desktop 2.0
Posted: ( Thu 22nd Feb 2001 07:20:44[AM] UTC )
Win4Lin is a program that allows you to install and run Windows 95/98 under Linux. With Windows up and running (from within Linux) you can easily add all your favorite Windows applications just like you would with a regular installation of Windows.

Linux : Reviews : X is for Xfce
Posted: ( Tue 20th Feb 2001 10:42:40[PM] UTC )
"This is a GTK+-based window manager that is made to resemble the CDE environment for UNIX, and having played around on that platform once upon a time, I can tell you that this is certainly a valid claim,"

Linux : Reviews : Kapital: Personal finance for Linux
Posted: ( Mon 19th Feb 2001 11:42:16[PM] UTC )
"Yes, there's GNUCash, and there's a Java-based personal finance manager, Moneydance, that works wherever Java does. Neither of these, though, has captured the hearts of those whose passage from Windows has been marred by lack of a slick, attractive personal finance manager."

Linux : Reviews : GAIM 0.11.0-pre4 Instant Messaging Client
Posted: ( Mon 19th Feb 2001 11:36:53[PM] UTC )
"At first glance, GAIM is merely a clone of AOL's instant messenger. While it does provide the majority of the functionality of AIM, GAIM adds much, much more."

Linux : Reviews : Roundup of web site tools
Posted: ( Mon 19th Feb 2001 10:09:01[PM] UTC )
"Of course, Linux wouldn't be Linux if it didn't play nicely with other systems, and Linux Web tools are no exception. The systems we looked at included both open source projects (such as PHP and Zope), as well as commercial products (such as Chili!Soft ASP and IBM's WebSphere)."

Linux : Reviews : Kylix - first impressions
Posted: ( Sat 17th Feb 2001 07:39:31[PM] UTC )
"The power of the Kylix is its objectivity. With packet you get lot of classes - labels, edition windows, listboxes, comboboxes, buttons, tabels etc. - but you aren't limited to them. You can create your own components, modify existing or bring into the project higher level classes - for example sheets, which can inherite further."

Linux : Reviews : NetRaider: Small, fast window to the web
Posted: ( Thu 15th Feb 2001 05:49:32[PM] UTC )
"NetRaider is advertised by its development team as "small, stable, independent, and free," four words a lot of us like to hear. In this case, there is mostly truth in the advertising. For just a 0.0.2 release, this browser was a very impressive product."

Linux : Reviews : SuSE Linux 7.0 PPC edition
Posted: ( Wed 14th Feb 2001 02:22:39[AM] UTC )
"If you've used SuSE's previous edition--version 6.4--you won't be surprised by any staggering improvements. But this release comes with such an impressive catalog of software compatible with systems running Yellow Dog Linux and LinuxPPC, it might be a good investment even if you don't install SuSE Linux itself."

Linux : Reviews : OpenBSD 2.8
Posted: ( Tue 13th Feb 2001 08:28:00[PM] UTC )
"Since OpenBSD is designed for security, and is "secure by default" (as their motto states), users wishing to have a functional and secure server need not toil with permissions and services, and in some cases, one needs to do nothing more than install the operating system and watch in awe as it does its work."

Linux : Reviews : U stands for UDE and uncharted territories
Posted: ( Tue 13th Feb 2001 10:04:21[AM] UTC )
"Aesthetically, UDE is not as full of eye-candy as GNOME, though there are some interesting looking themes available. There are also some workflow occurrences that make dealing with UDE a bit like dealing with my seven-year old: smart, but apt to get wacky on you every once in a while."

Linux : Reviews : Wobbly word processing
Posted: ( Mon 12th Feb 2001 08:47:00[PM] UTC )
"To date, the efforts of the entire open source world coupled with the commercial developers targeting the Linux market have failed to create a seriously first class word processor for professionals. There are a number of promising contenders - I've looked at the main alternatives."
