FreeBSD : Reviews : FreeBSD 5.2 Lacks Polishing In Some Areas but Rules in Others

FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE is the third major 5.x release for the next generation of the FreeBSD Unix system (release notes). For the last few years I only used the 4.x stable releases, waiting for a mature 5.x release to come out before trying it. I felt that the time had come with 5.2, but has it?

SUSE 9 offers a superb printed manual, a great installation interface, a modern KDE system in addition to the more standard, older GNOME interface, and a new kernel build. It's easy to see why Novell thought enough of the software to buy the company.

Mandrake Linux 10.0-preview edition pretty much defines the shape of things to come in Linux land in 2004. With Kernel 2.6, KDE 3.2 beta and XFree86 4.4 beta, it doesn't leave much to be desired.

Solaris, formerly known as SunOS, is a trademarked UNIX operating system derived from 4.4BSD-Lite and System V Release 4. It's a combination of BSD, SVR4, and proprietary Sun code, and it currently powers most of the world's 64-bit workstations. It was originally designed for the SPARC and UltraSPARC platforms, but it has moved into the x86 market as well and there will be an AMD64 port possibly as early as Q1 2004.

Have you been looking for an "All-in-one" (aka known as MFP, multi-function printer) for your Linux desktop? So have we, with somewhat mixed results. We found no MFPs in our price range (under $500.00) which are shipped with drivers for Linux. But we did find a number of MFPs which are usable on Linux machines, thanks to free software drivers available either with your Linux distribution or on the Internet.

Sun Microsystems' StarOffice 7, released November 12, offers significant advantages in performance, usability, and stability over rival commercial office suites, including Microsoft Office. However, when the comparison is to OpenOffice.org version 1.1, the open source project from which StarOffice takes its code, it's harder to say where the advantage lies.

There are several players in the Unix world, but few are as complete and refined as FreeBSD. It installs easily, scales well, updates without a hassle and holds Netcraft records for uptime.

Hancom Office 2.01 is the latest version from the Korean company Hancom Linux, released only a few days ago. The company used to offer a Windows version of their product, but they have since completely focused on the Linux platform, even though their product is pretty portable as it is based almost solely in the Qt 3 tooklkit.

All told, SuSE have created another excellent rendition of their popular Linux distribution. The installation, even (or, rather, especially) on a laptop, was smooth and worked without a hitch -- no small feat for installing Linux on a nearly new laptop, an undertaking often more likely to end in aggravation than success.

SuSE\'s Linux eMail Server III has an amazing number of features integrated into its GUI, including all of the DNS functions for handling virtual domains and hosts. If I were a brand new mail administrator this program would save me hours and hours of fussing with Sendmail and BIND and numerous other tools.

Even with most current OSes moving to a more automated method of installation and maintenance, Slackware has always maintained its simple, hands-on approach. This helps the user learn Linux commands and configuration quickly, and learn them correctly. This is quite possibly the reason Slackware has lasted so long. Slackware takes a completely different perspective and focuses on learning through practice -- or just using that power if you're a more advanced user. Which is maybe the thing that makes Slackware so popular. It is well-known within the Linux community that Slackware takes pride in simplicity. Slackware 8 is no exception to this rule, as it assures you'll be up and running with the likes of XFree86 4.1.0 and kernel 2.4.5 in no time.

Pippy is a port of (a subset of) Python to the PalmOS. With Pippy, Python programmers can create custom applications to run on Palm devices, as well as use Pippy as an interactive environment directly on the Palm. David Mertzevaluates the strengths and limitations of Pippy as a means of implementing Palm applications.

The award winning game, Jagged Alliance 2, has now been ported to the Linux platform by Tribsoft. While there are a few bugs in the software, and the possibility of a patch for it from Tribsoft is uncertain, they do not detract from the core of the game itself. If you like strategy, and more specifically, realistic turn based strategy, JA2 is probably for you. And once you have learned to play it well you can play it all over at a harder level, with different characters, and so on. Certainly a repeat player.

Kylix represents an important and, hopefully, successful step for program development for the Linux operating system. It is an IDE for the creation of software. More importantly, it is a rapid application development (RAD) tool that provides components for quick development of database connectivity, Internet content and graphical user interfaces. It delivers more than any other commercial equivalent for Linux through its business-oriented components. Although Kylix is an exciting product, it does cater to a certain audience: existing Delphi programmers and development teams aiming for portability of an enterprise/business application to Linux and Windows. The main problem, of course, is the Object Pascal programming language itself. It might not be enough to convince C/C++ programming shops to swap over to Kylix yet. But, Borland has bravely paved the way for commercial development on Linux.
