Linux : Articles : The Simputer: Low cost computing
By Posted: ( Mon 30th Jul 2001 02:15:11[AM] UTC )
One major obstacle to a widespread usage of computers in developing countries has been the high cost of hardware and software leading to high levels of software piracy. Although Linux and other open source "free" software has meant that such countries can now afford to use legal software, hardware costs still remain a multiple of the common man's monthly salary. Against this background, we now have the "Simputer" a low cost computing device from India that promises to usher in a new era of computing for the masses who otherwise would never be able to afford access to computers.

The existence different distributions of Linux have always given rise of conflicting views. Some feel that this leads to fragmentation and is therefore bad. Whereas there are others who feel that these actually enhance the product and help to customize it.So they are good for Linux's growth Evan Leibovitch, in defense of Linux and its various distros, likens it to a pizza. An interesting thought.

Linux : Howtos : Exorcise FTP, Telnet And Other Evil Daemons
By Posted: ( Wed 11th Jul 2001 08:44:17[PM] UTC )
Telnet and ftp send passwords over the network in clear text that can be easily sniffed. You should replace them with more modern tools such as ssh and scp. SSLtelnet/SSLftp are also available but do not seem to be in such wide use.

The worm's existence has given rise to two schools of thought. One, which feels that the worm will help in securing the system while the other is of the opinion that a worm is a worm after all and has to be eradicated. In this article we bring you the arguments put forth by the `cool about Cheese' school.
