Linux : Opinions : From behind the bifocals: An alternate view of Linux
By Posted: ( Sun 20th Feb 2005 06:28:28[AM] UTC )
It was recently suggested to me that I write a small article sharing my experiences with the Linux Operating System. After some careful consideration, here is my feeble attempt at journalism.

Linux : Opinions : Opening closed minds to open source
By Posted: ( Tue 14th Aug 2001 02:03:02[AM] UTC )
In his recent column Jack MacCrisken criticized open source advocates for treating the merits of open source versus proprietary software development as a simplistic battle between the forces of Good and Evil. Let's be clear. It's Microsoft that diagnosed Linux as a supposed "cancer" and polarized the debate to begin with. So I'm here to offer a second opinion: Contrary to Dr. Ballmer's misinformed prognosis, the weight of evidence shows that Linux, and open source software in general, can in fact co-exist with proprietary software.

Linux : Opinions : Why Microsoft is wary of open source?
By Posted: ( Tue 7th Aug 2001 04:39:51[AM] UTC )
There’s more to Microsoft’s recent attacks on the open-source movement than mere rhetoric: Linux’s popularity could hinder the software giant in its quest to gain control of a server market that’s crucial to its long-term goals.

Linux : Opinions : Should all software be open sourced?
By Posted: ( Wed 25th Jul 2001 01:23:52[AM] UTC )
There are always two sides to every story. And nowhere is that more apparent than when it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of open source vs. proprietary software.

Linux : Opinions : Why Linux is like pizza
By Posted: ( Fri 20th Jul 2001 01:29:53[AM] UTC )
The existence different distributions of Linux have always given rise of conflicting views. Some feel that this leads to fragmentation and is therefore bad. Whereas there are others who feel that these actually enhance the product and help to customize it.So they are good for Linux's growth Evan Leibovitch, in defense of Linux and its various distros, likens it to a pizza. An interesting thought.

Linux : Opinions : Thanks, but we don't want your Cheese (worm)!
By Posted: ( Sat 30th Jun 2001 12:14:42[AM] UTC )
The previous article dealt with arguments put forth by those who think that Cheese worm can be used to secure your system. Here we bring you counter arguments from those who feel that such a move is a bad idea, and no matter how the worm is used, it will only spell disaster.

Linux : Opinions : Cheese: If it's good (worm), let it be!
By Posted: ( Thu 28th Jun 2001 02:55:33[AM] UTC )
System administrators worldwide recently reported signs that another self-spreading program, or worm, had started to infect Linux systems. The worm's existence has given rise to two schools of thought. One, which feels that the worm will help in securing the system while the other is of the opinion that a worm is a worm after all and has to be eradicated. In this article we bring you the arguments put forth by the `cool about Cheese' school.

Linux : Opinions : Freedom vs. Freedom
By Posted: ( Thu 21st Jun 2001 04:40:23[AM] UTC )
A new poll came up on my friend's site. Question - What's your software philosophy? My answer - Open Source. Response - disbelief. My friend could not believe that I would pick this option over GPL. As it turns out, if you answer GPL you get a big bear hug and the whole community rises to greet you. Any other answer gets you strange looks and requires an explanation. Here is my explanation.

Linux : Opinions : Capitalist view of Open Source
By Posted: ( Tue 5th Jun 2001 09:38:01[PM] UTC )
This article examines the functioning of the GPL from the viewpoint of Capitalism, It does so with reference to the writings of one of the most hardline capitalists of all-Ayn Rand. And finally it concludes that the GPL operates along purely capitalist principles, and that the real enemies of Capitalism are those who seek to outlaw the GPL.

Linux : Opinions : Open Source-onomics: Examining some pseudo-economic arguments about Open Source
By Posted: ( Tue 29th May 2001 12:54:16[AM] UTC )
While the technical arguments against Linux and Open Source are being gradually silenced, several myths about the economics of Open Source continue to float about, confusing and scaring off people considering these alternative products. Worse, the Open Source community is itself divided on such issues, and is unable to provide a cogent rebuttal. This article is an attempt to set the record straight.

Linux : Opinions : My Linux wish list
By Posted: ( Wed 2nd May 2001 02:44:11[AM] UTC )
Like most other Open Source geeks, I would love calling myself a Linux evangelist. And this for two simple reasons--I love traveling and second and more important, I love talking about how Open Source has revolutionized Information Technology. But at the same time, I must admit that there are few aspects that Linux falls short in. In this article I touch upon a few hurdles, which in my opinion obstructs its progress to the desktop.

Linux : Opinions : To be or not to be: GNU / Linux?
By Posted: ( Tue 13th Feb 2001 10:01:37[AM] UTC )
You say Linux and I say GNU/Linux. This is one topic that leads to endless debate. Both camps are also quite vociferous and vocal too. But should the name matter? Does the name diminish or enhance the quality of the OS? Should a Linux or GNU/Linux user care?

FreeOS : Opinions : Open Source is here to stay!
By Posted: ( Thu 4th Jan 2001 01:47:03[AM] UTC )
The Open Source model of software development has churned out some truly remarkable pieces of software and is a fantastic example of global co-operation. The goal of the Open Source movement is to eventually replace the monopoly over thought and software imposed by companies like Microsoft and create a new order where freedom and flexibility is available to everyone. What is it about, how does it work and more importantly what can it do for you?
