The creator of the Linux operating system, Linus Torvalds, has weighed in on the issue of backporting features from newer Linux kernels into older ones, calling the practice a good thing for the most part.

SUSE's chief technology officer said he believes the practice of "backporting" features from the 2.6 Linux kernel into older versions is a "bad thing" because it interferes with standardization of the open source operating system.

Home appliances giant Samsung Electronics is leaning towards using Linux as the major operating system in its products. A Samsung official said the company will increase the number of Linux-based items and developers to adopt Linux as a strategic operating system.

For years, SuSE has considered its YAST (Yet Another Setup Tool) technology--software for installing, configuring and managing Linux--an advantage over its competitors and forbade them from incorporating it into the products they sold. But with the new plan, to be announced Monday at Novell's Brainshare conference, the company will release YAST under the General Public License (GPL), sources familiar with the plan said.
