In battles over operating system superiority, emotions run high. Capabilities are assembled like armies and run out on discussion boards to face the flames. So let me say this now: your operating system is probably better than mine. Most modern operating systems are better than FreeDOS when considered by any objective criteria. FreeDOS doesn't multitask, doesn't surf the Internet easily, isn't great for multimedia productions, and doesn't even do Windows. But I love it anyway.

Free windows clon for MS-DOS, based on Linux, Wine and Freedos, for run all windows programs, and same linux programs. Aviable the version 0.21 with more stability and now run ms-dos programs.

Free Desktop for DOS based on linux kernel 2.0.0, glibc, xfree86 3.3.6, ncurses, dosemu, wine and twin, for run microsoft windows programs and dos programs, very similar to windows 98 funcionality, and run the windows drivers.
All system it´s setting in dos mode or in windows, and can be run with a disk boot.

FreeDOS was a project started in 1994 to counteract Microsoft\'s stated intentions to do away with MS-DOS and move everyone to Windows. It employs no Microsoft code and is designed to be a work-alike equivalent to MS-DOS.

In the January, 2001 issue of Dr. Dobb's Journal there is an
article about using DOS in an embedded system. There is a
comparison of interrupt-latency times (interrupt disabling
while access the disk), and FreeDOS comes out ahead
with very low times.

Development Status
|
Very active. The site is up to date. Not as bad as most of the other free operating systems that seem to have sunk into oblivion. Still does not
have multitasking, protected mode. Works under DosEmu.
