The Darwin kernel is based on FreeBSD and Mach 3.0 technologies and provides protected memory and pre-emptive multitasking. Darwin runs on PowerPC-based Macintosh computers and work is underway to get Darwin running on Intel-based personal computers. Darwin 1.0 is the Mach 3.0-based core of Mac OS X. Preliminary support for Intel is provided, allowing developers to begin bringing Darwin to the Intel platform. Development Status Quite active. Apple is working hard here and is also giving back a lot of code to the open source community. Support for the Intel platform is also planned.
